After obtaining a patent on March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated his invention to the public at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Bell's patent became the most valuable yet obtained, and quickly spawned decades of competitors, patent disputes and lawsuits.
