Founded in 1812 by many of the United States' leading naturalists for "the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences," the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia is the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the United States. Its natural history collections, including the herbarium of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, contain more than 17 million specimens.
