An expert in a wide range of fields, University of Pennsylvania professor Joseph Leidy (1823-1891) spanned the transition from the gentleman amateurs of the early 1800s to the professional scientists who replaced them. In the mid-nineteenth century, Leidy was one of America's foremost anatomists. For his work in paleontology he has been hailed as the "Father of American Vertebrate Paleontology."
