An immigrant from Freiburg, Germany, Barney Dreyfuss purchased the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise in 1900 and quickly turned them into National League champions. In 1903 Dreyfuss brokered the peace that established peace between the National League and the upstart American League, then laid the groundwork for the inter-league championship soon known as the World Series.
