To recruit members for his weightlifting team, Hoffman offered $10 a week jobs in his oil burner plant, and offered training facilities, travel money for meets, and a gold medal for anyone who broke an American record, and a diamond studded gold medal for breaking a world record. By the late 1930s, Hoffman could boast that York had "the strongest [weightlifting] team in the world." In 1932 the York Oil Burner AThletic include included these members.
