Born in Forksville, PA, Harold "Red" Grange became an American idol playing football at the University of Illinois in the early 1920s. Lured into the fledging National Football League in 1925 by a salary that dwarfed Babe Ruth's, Grange drew new fans for professional football, which until then had been unable to compete with the college game.
