Founded in 1895, the Irene Kaufman Settlement House provided a broad range of social services for Jewish children and adults in Pittsburgh's tough Hill district. In the early 1900s, physical education programs for young Jewish boys and girls were the Settlement's most popular offerings, and IKS athletes and teams won prizes in many city competitions.
