To promote spiritual and physical wellbeing of Jewish females, the Council of Jewish Women in Pittsburgh founded the Irene Kaufman Settlement House in 1895. After World War I, physical education programs for Jewish boys and girls were the most popular offerings at the Settlement. They also helped combat stereotypes about the physical frailties of immigrant Jews.
