The popular amusement of bull baiting in the central part of this satire. The onlookers have the hawkers and pickpockets preying on them as the bull attacks the dog.

Pennsylvania colonists brought with them popular games and recreations from the Old World, including bullbaiting, cockfighting, and other violent amusements that the Commonwealth's Quaker leaders abhorred. Laws against such activities, however, then as now, were unable to prevent their continuance.
