In the early 1870s, the Heinz company operated out of a two-story Sharpsburg farmhouse along the northern edge of Pittsburgh, and products were delivered by horse-drawn wagons. After planting 100 acres of fields along the Allegheny River, Heinz and partner L.C. Noble expanded to twenty-four horses and a dozen wagons.
