The year after the Brophys had this picture taken at their home in Ebensburg, the CIO merged with the American Federation of Labor. Now in his seventies, Brophy continued to work in the national AFL-CIO office, serve on the Advisory Committee on Civil Defense Administration for the United States Department of Labor, and work on his autobiography, published as John Brophy: Miner's Life, the year after his death in 1963.
