When jobless workers gathered at Philadelphia's Reyburn Square on August 25, 1932, to demand that City Council provide relief for the city's most needy, police used force to disperse them and beat one of the speakers. In the years that followed, the city and state would witness dozens of violent clashes between workers and law enforcement officers.
