Henry Clay Furnaces, West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pa. The Henry Clay Furnace was built by Peter Haldeman, a merchant of Columbia, in 1845. In 1857 it was purchased by Mr. Grubb, of New Jersey, and James McCormick, Esq., of Harrisburg. The furnace remained idle from 1857 to 1863, when it was purchased by Henry McCormick (son of James), John Q. Denney, of Columbia, and John Haldeman, of Harrisburg. Jeremiah G. Hess, a coal merchant of Columbia, purchased the interest of Mr. McCormick. They sold out to C. B. Grubb and Son.
