Equipped with army uniforms and weapons, more than 5,000 volunteers in the Pennsylvania Reserve Defense Corps maintained 24-hour vigils at strategic locations around the state and did patrol duty when required. Members of the Minute Men, another auxiliary military organization, furnished their own equipment and wore a distinctive armband on their uniforms. In addition, more than 8,500 members of the Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol flew aiming and tracking missions, and served as submarine spotters.
