When Franklin Delano Roosevelt put together his first cabinet after his election as president in 1932, he selected progressive Republican Harold LeClair Ickes as his Secretary of the Interior. Born on a farm outside Altoona, PA, Ickes would serve in that office from 1933 to 1946.
