In 1944, George Catlett Marshall (seated in the middle) became only the second American general awarded a five-star rank, after which he joked that if the U.S. ever created the American equivalent of Field Marshall, he would have to be addressed as Marshall Marshall. Included among his aids were two other Pennsylvanians: Lt Gen. Henry H. "Hap" Arnold (seated at left), and Maj. Gen. J.T. McNarney, Chief of War Department Reorganization Board.
