Organized in 1895, the Berliner Gramophone Company set up its headquarters in Philadelphia, where it manufactured gramophones and records in a building at 10th and Lombard streets. In 1897 the Berliner Gramophone Company opened the nation's first professional recording studio and a retail shop for the sale of gramophone records in downtown Philadelphia.
