Terrence Powderly, the son of Irish immigrants who lived in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, helped found and lead the Knights of Labor starting in the late 1870s. Powderly served 3 two-year terms as mayor of Scranton representing the Greenback-Labor Party beginning in 1879.
