In the 1910s, Henry Frick constructed a $5,000,000 mansion in New York, designed to accommodate his paintings and other art objects. When Frick died in 1919, he willed that the house, its art works, and furnishings become a gallery called The Frick Collection, after the death of his wife. Opened in 1935, the Frick Collection is one of the nation's finest small collections of paintings by old European masters.
