Transporting anthracite to markets was one of several challenges facing the burgeoning coal industry, and lead to the development of canals and railroads. Here, railroad cars transfer their loads of hard coal to canal boats at the head of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
