Organized by the AFL for better wages, an 8-hour day, and union recognition, the Great Steel Strike of 1919 eventually numbered more than 350,000 workers. Undermined by the post-war Red Scare, the strike, which lasted more than 3 months, proved a disheartening failure. Most Pennsylvania steel workers would not win the right to union representation until the 1930s.
