In the early 1900s, Pittsburgh's Hill District was inhabited by a diverse mix of residents, including large numbers of Irish, eastern European Jews, and African Americans. When jobs in the steel mills attracted thousands of southern blacks to Pittsburgh in the 1910s and 1920s, the Hill became Pittsburgh's most celebrated African-American neighborhood.
