A Russian aristocrat who gave up his wealth and position to minister to a small Catholic parish on the Pennsylvania frontier, Demetrius Gallitzen defended the Catholic church in America in a number of published pamphlets, the first of which was his A Defense of Catholic Principles, published in Pittsburgh in 1816.
