Constructed by Philadelphia merchant Adam Hoops in the late 1760s about ½ mile from the banks of the Delaware River, Summerseat was the center of a large plantation. Robert Morris bought the house in 1781, and used it as his summer retreat from Philadelphia until his bankruptcy in 1798, when it was purchased by George Clymer.
