From the 18th century to the present day, the most familiar images of the early American frontier have been military campaigns and acts of violence between Native American, European and colonial people. Yet most day-to-day encounters among these diverse groups were peaceful. Natives and newcomers exchanged the products of their labor and far-flung homelands, as well as stories and ideas that changed old perceptions and practices forever.
