Born in Wales, James J. Davis was a living example of the American success story. Starting as an apprentice in a Sharon, Pennsylvania iron mill at the age of eight, "Puddler Jim" went on to serve as the Secretary of Labor from 1921-1930 and then as a U. S. Senator from 1930-1945. Davis also wrote a memoir, The Iron Puddler, (1922) about his early life in Pennsylvania.
