In 1735, Gustavus Hesselius painted these extraordinary portraits of Delaware chiefs Lapowinska and Tishcohan, the earliest known actual images of Pennsylvania Indians. Hesselius painted the portraits at the request of Thomas Penn, whose agents were at the time negotiating for land in the Lehigh Valley; the infamous Walking Purchase of 1737.
