On the morning of June 28, 1863, Yankee militia spread across the western side of the Susquehanna River in a line centered on Oyster Point watched as Confederate cavalry entered Mechanicsburg. Over the next two days, Confederate artillery under General Albert G. Jenkins lobbed shells toward the Yankees while he awaited orders to attack Harrisburg.
