By the time of the Gettysburg Campaign, Lee's veterans were tough and experienced warriors. Living essentially outdoors for nearly two years, they had crossed countless mountains and valleys through all kinds of weather. In this photograph three of Lee's tough veterans, taken prisoners during the Battle of Gettysburg, still show the toughness that made them such formidable opponents.
