Pennsylvanian George Gordon Meade arrived at Gettysburg sometime after midnight on July 1, 1863. Meade located his headquarters in a small farmhouse owned by widow Leister, alongside the Taneytown Road behind Cemetery Ridge. After fierce attacks by Lee on July 2, on both ends of the Union line, Meade held a "Council of War" at his headquarters to seek the advice of his subordinates. To a man, his officers advised him to stay and fight it out.
