General Ambrose Powell Hill commanded Lee's Third Corps troops marching through South Mountain gap towards Cashtown, with an eye towards Gettysburg beyond. Although he delivered a lackluster performance at Gettysburg, Hill would remain one of Lee's trusted corps commanders until he was shot and killed by a Pennsylvania soldier on April 2, 1865, just days before Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
