Looking west across the Sporting Hill plateau, the stone McCormick house is visible in this modern photograph. On June 30, 1863, Confederate artillery from Ewell's Corps shelled this area as Rebel cavalry clashed with New York militia and Pennsylvania artillery nearby. This is the site of the Gettysburg campaign's northernmost battle engagement.
