Some time in late 1862 or early in 1863, Foster teamed up with New Yorker George Cooper, an aspiring songwriter who hoped to jump start his career by working with the once popular songwriter. The pair produced a number of theatrical songs and Civil War songs, none of them memorable, before Foster's untimely death in January, 1864.
