Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright and theater director George S. Kaufman (1889-1961) bought a farm outside New Hope, PA in 1936. There, Kaufman joined a community of artists and writers in what became known as the Bucks County "Genius Belt," which included Oscar Hammerstein II, James A. Michener, Dorothy Parker, and Pearl S. Buck
