On July 26, 1794, David Bradford and some associates robbed the mail on its way from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, then opened the stolen letters at the Black Horse Tavern in Canonsburg. Alarmed by what they found in letters from Federalist sympathizers, Braddock then sent out a call for a mustering of the local militias. On August 1, more than 5,000 troops gathered at Braddock's field, just eight miles from Pittsburgh.
