An engineering marvel that allowed the PRR to conquer the Alleghenies, Horseshoe Curve is one America's earliest and best-known railroad landmarks. First opened in 1854, the Curve was so important to the nation's economy and defense that during World War 2 the government posted armed guards to protect it against Nazi saboteurs.
