In 1740 evangelist George Whitefield brought a group of Moravian brethren to the Lehigh Valley, where he founded the "Barony of Nazareth" on a 5,000-acre tract of land. Whitefield's missionary settlement quickly collapsed, but soon became the site of the Moravian town of Nazareth, a well-ordered and prosperous Moravian settlement.
