Constructed to serve as a meeting place for abolitionists, Pennsylvania Hall was burned down during a meeting of the second Anti-Slavery Convention of American Women on May 16, 1838, just four days after its opening, by a mob outraged at the "promiscuous intermingling indoors and out of blacks and whites."
