Rather than withdraw from the Ohio Country after they had defeated the French–as they had promised–the British instead constructed Fort Pitt and turned the land around it into settlements. In this painting Robert Griffing depicts Indians looking down upon Fort Pitt and the beginnings of what would become the city of Pittsburgh, and their realization that the British intended to stay and take control of the region.
