In the 1930s Philadelphia's Budd Company introduced the assembly line to the railroad passenger car industry. Budd's trademark was the stainless steel coach. Lightweight and low maintenance, it represented the latest innovations in both materials and styling. The Budd passenger coach, introduced during the Great Depression, helped spark a revival of passenger interest by revitalizing the excitement and fun of travel by rail.
