Lewis was furious when Corp of Discovery carpenter Patrick Gass in 1807 published the first account of the expedition. The crude illustrations, although they showed little of the American west, were improvements over the fanciful drawings that accompanied the fictional accounts of the expedition that appeared soon after the Corps of Discovery's return.
