In 1883 an art jury for the Temple Competition of Historical Paintings found William Trego's iconic painting of Washington at Valley Forge of insufficient merit to qualify for an award, despite considering it the best in the competition. Trego's painting, however, would become such an iconic image of that event that the United States Postal Service reproduced as a souvenir postage sheet during the United States Bicentennial in 1976.
