In the 1880s Nellie Bly won national acclaim by assuming false identities to purchase an unwanted baby and expose corrupt employment agencies and the plight of women in America, and by traveling around the world in 72 days. Convinced that the New York World was not properly rewarding her for her stories, Bly quit the paper--and forced it to give her the raise she had demanded
