An immigrant from Ireland, William Findley (1742-1821) became one of western Pennsylvania’s most outspoken political leaders in the decades following American independence. A leader within Pennsylvania of the movement to block ratification of the Constitution, Findley as a U.S. Congressman also used his pen to oppose what he viewed as the unwarranted expansion of the power of the federal government.
