A center of Catholic worship for Philadelphia's Irish population since 1796, St. Augustine's Church was burned to the ground during rioting in 1844. Augustinian friars successfully sued for $80,000 in damages that they used to rebuild the church. The order later established Villanova University as a seat of Catholic education in the city.
