Published in Philadelphia from 1830 to 1898, Godey’s Lady’s Magazine for decades ruled as the “queen of monthlies." Under the editorship of Sarah Josepha Hale, (1837-1877) it was the most popular women’s magazine of the mid-1800s, and helped solidify Philadelphia’s position as a center of the American popular magazine industry.
