Brown set Wieland, considered by many both the first great American novel in a manse overlooking the Schuylkill River. In this and his other novels, Brown began the tradition of American “gothic” literature that runs through Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe to Stephen King and other current masters of horror.
