In 1742, Benjamin Franklin became the first American printer to publish a novel, when he released the first of two volumes of Pamela: or, Virtue Rewarded, a best seller in England. American readers, however, were not yet ready for such frivolous reading as novels. Pamela sold poorly, and another novel would not be published in the colonies until 1768.
