This 1794 sketch by Eduoard C.V. Colbert, Comte de Maulevrier, captured the Azilum colony at its zenith. This refuge for French Royalists, however, would soon falter. Many exiles soon felt the irresistible pull of southern cities like Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans, and of French colonies in the Caribbean.
