In September 1832 on his way to an exploration of the American west, Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied of Weid visited the Harmony Society community at Economy, Pennsylvania. Accompanying him was Swiss artist Johann karl Bodmer, who painted this watercolor of the self-sufficient town, which then included with farms, industries, a natural history museum, deer park, and orchestra.
